Tatter sail says Berdahl has figures to back Tattersall In 1967 a new assis tant professor made $10,000, he says Adjusting for inflation, an assistant at the same real in come now would cost $27,000 The University pays between $19,000 and $20,000. Berdahl says An average salary level that doesn't keep pace with inflation is not the only problem. Berdahl says Some faculty barely make enough to subsist, he says "A number of professors are below income assistance levels ” A local newspaper article last June featured an assistant professor at the University whose children were eligible for reduced price school lunches Blame for the low average in faculty salaries has been put in a lot of places but none more often than the Oregon Legisla ture The Legislature, which con trols the purse strings for the state system, has in the past and especially this year, tightened those strings to points that have been labeled everything from unthinkable to intolerable "University professors receive the same increases as other public employees," Ber dahl says "What the Legisla ture didn't address are the mar kets elsewhere " The solution to the problem is fairly obvious says Tattersall more money for salaries Weekend Special $2500 200 FREE MILES Friday afternoon to Monday morning A-WAV ■11:1 I 683-0874 87 Coburg Road Some Restrictions staff 77m Oregon Dally Emerald 1$ published Monday through Friday except during finals week and racaliont by tha Oregon Dally Emerald Publishing Co.
